Student volunteers in the university's Eyes and Ears Program are being recognized for successful community policing efforts on campus. More than 30 criminal justice students who volunteer their time to the program will receive certificates of appreciation at a luncheon beginning at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30, at the de Wetter Center (formerly the Alumni Lodge).
Launched in March, Eyes and Ears Program volunteers patrol UTEP's parking lots in an effort to prevent crimes on campus. As crime prevention specialists, Eyes and Ears patrols receive police training, but do not carry firearms or other weapons. They act as a direct link to university police officers, providing them with information and looking for suspicious activity in the campus parking lots.
The UTEP Criminal Justice Student Association operates the program in cooperation with the Department of Criminal Justice and UTEP Police.
